Dog Handling

I was just talking to Kathy, our groomer about some dogs being reactive to touch and handling. We see a lot of dogs that LOVE to be pet and adored but are sensitive to certain things. The things we notice the most are ears, mouth and feet. Dogs become very comfortable being pet on the head, back, sides, tummy etc. because that's where we usually pet them. Just like anything else in our pups life...if they don't use it, they loose it. Don't socialize for 6 months, you'll have a more sensitive possibly skittish greeter. Don't ask for a sit at a door for weeks...you see my point. Make sure to check your dog's ears, mouth, legs and feet regularly. Touch and maybe gently tug on each nail to get them use to handling. Use treats and praise to reward and most importantly calm positive energy. Your Vet, groomer, trainer and children will thank you for taking 2 minutes to make Fido's feet not so sensitive!

As always, exercise your dog's body and mind. Walk, train and live together.

A tired dog is a happy dog.
